И эти «чужаки» количественно значительно уступают гавайцам азиатского и полинезийского происхождения. Жители Гавайев вообще, и Гонолулу в особенности, говоря о своём доме, любят употреблять слово «райский уголок». Но история борьбы за души и сердца местного населения миссионеров и торговцев в XIX — начале XX в. закончилась тем, что гавайцы потеряли почти всё. Они были обращены в христианство, но утратили свою культуру, их научили читать, писать, считать, но их заразили болезнями, против которых у них не было иммунитета. В 1893 королева Лилиуокалани [*Liliuokalani] была свергнута американцами, жившими на островах, и пять лет спустя острова были аннексированы США. Когда японцы напали на Пёрл- Харбор (7 декабря 1941), город Гонолулу вошёл в сознание американцев как пересыльный пункт перед отправкой на фронт. Они называли о-в Оаху, на котором находится город, «Скалой», и относились к нему с ненавистью. Теперь же 4 миллиона туристов ежегодно устремляются в Гонолулу, принося доход в 4 миллиарда долларов, и среди них много тех, кто уже побывал здесь в годы войны. Залив: Мамала- Бей [Mamala Bay].
